I have shared that my husband and I are in a class that is devoted to marriage relationships. Our study for the week is about forgiveness. It has my thoughts all over the place. Is there a way to really forgive someone and move past it, or will it always remain with you? I have a couple of different thoughts.
I think that you can forgive and move past a situation. I even believe that moving past the situation can let you heal and you can truly forgive. The bible says we are to forgive others, yet it does not say we have to trust them immediately with our emotions. Forgiveness can be instant but trust has to be rebuilt over time and most likely it will need some set boundaries to be restored.
My other thought is that, I believe a hurt of any significance in your life can change you as a person. You can reflect on why certain circumstances happened and how to move past them. I know there have been times when I have forgiven someone of doing wrong and causing much pain in my life, but I removed myself from the relationship with that person.
The difference today, I know I have been married more than once but I would never say give up- not without a fight. If one person is in danger with their life, that can be a different circumstance, but over forgiveness- never stop trying. No relationship comes without work involved and any worth having will require spending time, being around someone, and trusting them (all of these are work). I will not walk away from a friendship, family member, or any loved one over something that can be forgiven and trust rebuilt, not again. Life is too short and we all deserve to have and be loved. Stop holding on to the small stuff and let it go.
Matthew 6:14-15English Standard Version (ESV)
14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
